Matching air traffic and safety demands with the right network is a major challenge in ATM. It is central to achieving the ambitious goals of the industry globally – increasing air space capacity, enhancing safety and reducing cost per flight. While merging all IP applications onto a converged IP infrastructure would reduce operational costs, safety-critical applications require a dedicated solution. This is also a requirement for the implementation of SWIM, virtual centres and remote towers.

Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) need to integrate multiple technologies (e.g. MPLS, microwave, VSAT) onto a single backbone from many providers. The design of such a hybrid network has many challenges – given differences in network delays, jitter, routing-protocol support and failover behaviour. Frequentis solves these challenges by providing application-aware routing of communications based not only on the priority of those communications, but also on the current performance of the networks available to carry the traffic.

 

vitalsphere: ATM-grade network performance

vitalsphere provides a level of safety and end-to-end performance not available from conventional networks. By brokering network capacity between ATM-specific applications and non-ATM specialised backbone networks, vitalsphere reduces total cost of ownership and allows for bandwidth savings of up to 90%.

vitalsphere combines:

  • Intelligent routing & control - Matching real-time network performance and application needs. The coordination of requirements from different applications optimises bandwidth utilisation and operational cost.
  • Situational awareness - Vendor-neutral end-to-end monitoring of applications and networks. This includes real-time measurements for every backbone, and dedicated interfaces to VSAT modems.

Highest end-to-end performance for every application

Utilising brown-out detection allows for resolution of failures before they occur, as it enables action before a link black-out. This process uses real-time information on actual network performance to re-route safety-critical communication flows before the link fails. Deterministic communication flows are the foundation for end-to-end path diversity – improving service availability by separating main and standby communication flows across the entire network.

VCX-IP is an advanced gateway for voice and data communications complying with European and international VoIP standards for civil and military ATM. It provides protocol conversion for radio, phone and data, enables ATM-specific contingency scenarios using intelligent routing, and optimises ATM applications used by civil and military air navigation service providers.

In the world of air traffic management (ATM), the structure of ATM systems, networks and ANSP organisations is both complex and fragmented. In combination with today’s approach, in which ANSPs use highly resilient, modern converged IP networks, this situation creates an opaque environment, in which it is almost impossible to have a common situational picture for stakeholders. 

ATM Network Quality Assurance

NetBroker is an automatic service level manager tailored for air traffic management (ATM) networks. Combining real-time performance information from the network with application needs and pre-defined mitigation scenarios, it enables converged networks serving all applications – from safety-critical to administrative. It fills the technical gap between conventional IP networks and the very specific and heterogeneous requirements of different ATM applications.

SWIM

Surveillance Data Distribution

SDDS-NG is a state-of-the-art solution for the easy and safe interconnection of any system that handles surveillance data. In ATC, the need to integrate an increasing number of surveillance systems is well-known. However, due to changing technologies and additional surveillance data users, the necessary stability of surveillance distribution environments is at risk. SDDS-NG is the safe and scalable solution, catering for all current and future surveillance distribution needs by providing the single access point for surveillance data.

Morocco upgrades aeronautical message handling with Frequentis Comsoft

The Moroccan Airports Authority, ONDA (Office National Des Aéroports), entrusted Frequentis Comsoft with the upgrade of their message handling and switching capability in line with latest ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) basic and extended AMHS (ATS Message Handling System) service profiles.

Thanks to its strategic location, Morocco is an important hub for air traffic flows between many regions of the world. The continuous and secure flow of aeronautical messages is crucial to safe air traffic management, which is why upgrades to new standards and the implementation of new features are vital in preparing ONDA for the future demands and challenges of its airspace.

CAELUM and FREQUENTIS partner to develop solutions for South Korean unmanned traffic management market

CAELUM Co., Ltd, a South Korean aerospace & defense industry developer, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Frequentis Singapore Pte Ltd, a global industry leader in air traffic management (ATM) systems, to work in collaboration on Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Unmanned Traffic Management (UTM) solutions in South Korea.

The MoU represents the first steps between CAELUM and Frequentis to address the growing need for next-generation traffic management systems capable of handling the unique challenges of UAM technologies, including flexible use of airspace. Initial discussions confidently advocate the combination of Frequentis’ know-how in ATM system development and manufacturing with CAELUM’s financing and project management capabilities to create a successful UTM solution. CAELUM and Frequentis have committed to further discussions in an effort to develop their joint action plan.

Frequentis to upgrade Mexican VSAT network in cooperation with ND Satcom

SENEAM, the Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) of Mexico, has selected a turnkey VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) network solution from Frequentis, in cooperation with ND Satcom. The main goal of the project is to optimise the bandwidth utilisation of the satellite segment and increase the availability of all Air Traffic Management (ATM) services. The solution complies with strict requirements of the ATM domain as well as specifically supporting SENEAM’s safety-critical operations.
