NAS Modernization

Our offer for the National Airspace System (NAS)

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is working to modernize the U.S National Airspace System (NAS). A trusted partner to the FAA for over 25 years, with more than 350 tower solutions installed into the NAS, Frequentis is proud to support the FAA again in this mission. As the FAA tackles the critical challenge of modernizing the NAS, Frequentis will apply its expertise as a proven enabler of safe and efficient air traffic operations.

NAS modernization requires innovative, rigorously tested solutions that bring outdated Air Traffic Control (ATC) technology up to modern standards while keeping the NAS running safely and efficiently. With expert partnership from Frequentis, the challenge of NAS modernization becomes less daunting and more of a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build resilient infrastructure, from voice to automation, to prepare the NAS for today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities.

Voice communication is essential for ATC, especially during degraded or contingency operations. Modernization through transitioning to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) enables integration with IP-based infrastructure while maintaining availability and continuity. Frequentis has supplied the FAA with Voice Communication Systems (VCS) since 2008 and currently provides a native IP VCS under the VoICE contract. Our IT-based VCS (X10) offers a configurable interface, distributed microservice architecture, built-in redundancy, integrated IT security and the flexibility to support the long-term evolution of voice services.

Digitalization and automation are essential in NAS modernization. The Frequentis Digital Tower Solution enables remote towers by replicating a traditional tower’s panoramic view using a 360-degree camera array and ATC-grade video – enhancing situational awareness in all weather and lighting conditions. Developed in close coordination with the FAA and NATCA, the solution meets FAA and international standards, enabling scalable deployment across airports of various configurations. With our proven capabilities and collaborative approach, Frequentis is a trusted modernization partner for the FAA.

NAS modernization is a complex process that demands the careful integration of new technologies while ensuring safe, uninterrupted operations. To support the incremental modernization required for a smooth and safe transition to the future NAS, Frequentis offers network solutions that bridge legacy TDM systems with IP-based infrastructure. This approach allows the FAA to gradually transition and validate new technology, preventing legacy systems from becoming obsolete before native IP solutions are fully implemented, enabling a controlled and tested modernization process.

Upgrading automation is a key element of NAS modernization, aimed at consolidating tools for separation and traffic management functions onto platforms that are easier to maintain and evolve. By adopting modern architectures, the FAA can enhance resiliency while reducing duplication and minimizing reliance on single vendors. Frequentis scalable automation solutions support a broad range of functions, from pre-flight planning to real-time situational awareness including UAS traffic integration. Their modularity accommodates various operational contexts such as tower, approach, and contingency configurations.

Communication across the NAS involves controller-to-pilot exchanges and coordination among ATC facilities for regional, cross-airspace, and interagency operations, including space integration. Conferencing capabilities, provided by Frequentis, support routine planning and operational coordination, as well as responses during irregular operations. These systems enable FAA personnel to work with airports, airlines, and other stakeholders, and facilitate collaboration with NASA for launch and mission-related activities, including communication with the International Space Station when needed.
