smartStrips® Electronic Flight Strip System

Air traffic around the world grows at a rapid pace. This demands an evolution of current Air Navigation Systems into new modern architectures. smartStrips®, the Frequentis solution for electronic flight strip operation, has been designed to provide a simplified and more efficient handling of flight data in towers, approach control and en route centres.

smartStrips® – The Best of Both Worlds
smartStrips® presents information in a familiar fashion. Flight strip appearance and manipulation closely follows the conventional paper strip. This combination of adherence to the established look and operating practice together with the computer based operation provides the best-in-class solution.

smartStrips® in all Sizes and Shapes
smartStrips® presents all data on a large 15” to 21” touch sensitive computer display. For easy operation the controller uses an interactive stylus-pen equivalent to the use of the ball pen on paper strips. In addition, keyboard and mouse operation is supported.

All actions of the controller are immediately transferred to the smartStrips® server and forwarded to flight data processing systems. The automatically archived strips can easily be retrieved for billing, statistics or investigation.

smartStrips® Levels of Integration
smartStrips® can be connected to any source of flight data, such as AFTN, FDIO, ADEXP or other FDP systems. The following levels of integration are supported:
  • smartStrips® connects directly to the Flight Strip Printer Interface of the FDP system. This allows immediate deployment or standalone operation with minimum technical and operational adaptation.
  • smartStrips® as fully integrated FDP frontend permits bi-directional communication to and from the FDP system.
  • The Frequentis TAPtools® slim FDP engine offers a cost effective FDP solution for local installations or as a contingency backup.
Minimised Transition and Training Time
Single-click-operation, advanced graphics design paired with sophisticated animation and handwriting capability guarantees fast acceptance by users, thus minimising transition time and training effort.

smartStrips® – Automation Features
smartStrips® includes features for workflow management, automatic or manual strip and layout arrangement. Each feature can be selectively activated.
  • Automatic transfer of a strip
Strips can be automatically transferred between positions controlled by a workflow script or triggered by the controller.
  • Site configurable screen layout
The smartStrips® screen layout including strip bays, strip layout and strip fields can be customised to accommodate local regulations, procedures and workflow preference.
  • Automatic sorting, gravity or dynamic resizing
Strip bays and flight strips can be arranged automatically or by the controller, allowing flexible arrangement of the operator position.

Inter-Product Functionality

The combining of different data sources into one uniform solution gives added value to the ATC-process. smartStrips® supports the following Inter-Product functions:
  • VIF – Voice Control Interface: The smartStrips® voice recognition system converts controller commands directly into visual data displayed on the screen.
The smartStrips® text-to-speech system automatically translates controller actions into voice broadcasts to the aircraft. For instance the instruction of a frequency change will be transmitted via an automated voice command over radio frequency to the aircraft.
  • smartStrips® application interface provides MET, NAVAID, and RWY information displayed on the strip interactively.
