FUTURE-PROOF OPERATOR POSITIONS FOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS
Integrated Tower Project Finland The Finnish Civil Aviation Administration (FCAA) decided to break new grounds with a most innovative and future-oriented concept, which defines a unique standard for small and medium- sized towers. During the last three years, the FCAA equipped four Finnish airports with user-friendly, reliable and future-proof operator positions for the benefit of air traffic controllers. The Austrian high-tech company Frequentis was the partner with whom the FCAA realised this solution.
The Exemplar: Tower at Tampere- Pirkkala Airport Tampere-Pirkkala is one of the most important airports in Finland for charter flights, only surpassed by Helsinki- Vantaa. It provides important air traffic control services: aerodrome, approach, and radar control services. Different information from more than 30 data sources such as radar, weather information and runway condition information have to be collected, stored and displayed. The solution, based on TAPtools® technology, presents all information in a unified way and guarantees easy and safe handling. Traditional displays and control panels are integrated into a set of LCD-monitors and touch panels. Each operator position consists of a table that can be adjusted in height with three touch panels and three LCD-monitors. The touch panels are mainly used to control a variety of electrical equipment, e.g.: runway lights, tower capsule lights and curtains, navigation equipment and power generators. The large LCD-screens host a number of applications - e.g.: airfield, radar, flight planning - all in support of the air traffic controller's work. Other applications are radar, maps, flight planning, VDF-finder, equipment status monitoring, and various web-based information applications.
AIRPORTS FIJI LIMITED AT THE LEADING EDGE OF AIR NAVIGATION SERVICE PROVISION AIRPORTS FIJI LIMITED is a leader in airport, air traffic management ope-rations, and air navigation infrastructure in the Pacific region. The air traffic control towers at the international airports Nadi and Nausori are equipped with digital voice communication systems for air/ground communication, radio navigation aid monitoring, meteorological data display and airport information service based on the Frequentis TAPtools® product family (smartMET, smartNASI, smartATIS, smartLICOS). The advanced interactive touch panels and computers provide the essential tools air traffic controllers who need to control aircraft movements. The controllers also work with the Frequentis smartStrips®, the interactive tablet display system replacing traditional paperbased- flight strips. The new system employs a harmonised graphical user interface and provides a consistent feel to controllers, resulting in significant improvements in usability. „We want the best state-of-the-art facilities and are very excited that these technologies take Fiji to the leading edge of air navigation service provision in this region“, says Sakiusa Tuisolia, Chief Executive Officer of AIRPORTS FIJI LIMITED.
