European Controllers successfully validate the SESAR Release 2 Integrated Tower (iCWP) / Prototype built by Frequentis and DFS

EUROCONTROL, the German air navigation service provider DFS and SJU member Frequentis coordinated and performed a first SESAR iCWP tower validation. The FREQUENTIS/DFS iCWP integrated tower prototype integrates the various subsystems...

EUROCONTROL, the German air navigation service provider DFS and SJU member Frequentis coordinated and performed a first SESAR iCWP tower validation. The FREQUENTIS/DFS iCWP integrated tower prototype integrates the various subsystems available at medium- to high-traffic airports.
The iCWP integrated tower prototype was operationally validated over a three-day period in June 2012 as part of SESAR Release 2. Based on the first release of the Open Framework Architecture, the prototype enhances off-the-shelf products (Frequentis smartStrips® Flight Data Handling, Frequentis smartTools Information Display and Support System, the DFS PHOENIX ATC&A-SMGCS Surveillance System and the DFS PHOENIX Ground and Air Situation Display) with those features required to fulfil the initial operational requirements.
EUROCONTROL, DFS and Frequentis coordinated and performed this first successful SESAR iCWP tower validation, which simulated four different air traffic scenarios at Hamburg Airport. EUROCONTROL, DFS and DSNA had already conducted technical verification of the prototype in April.
A core pillar of the Single European Sky vision is increased interoperability of systems at a technical and operational level. The Open Framework Architecture provides the necessary foundation to secure this functionality. The benefits to the ATM industry come from stronger investment protection and a wider choice of solution providers, thanks to the number of certified vendors that will adopt the Open Framework Architecture in the future.
The FREQUENTIS/DFS iCWP integrated tower prototype integrates the various subsystems available at medium- to high-traffic airports. It uses a homogeneous interaction concept to provide a complete suite of services for efficient and safe tower/terminal flight data management (TFDM). For example:

Flight data services and traffic management and decision support tools (via Frequentis smartStrips® - electronic flight strips - or DFS Showtime - TFDPS)

Airport and weather services (via Frequentis smartTools or DFS PHOENIX weather server)

Surveillance data services (via the DFS PHOENIX A-SMGCS solution)

The underlying messaging infrastructure is based on a draft version of an airport-wide information management approach. This uses SWIM principles (Open Framework Architecture) and follows EUROCAE Standard ED-133. The approach allows easy implementation of new functionality, such as highlighting of aircrafts or safety nets across different systems. Voice communication services are implemented using the market-leading, fully IP-based voice communication solution from Frequentis.
The exercise successfully validated the baseline concept, based on the Open Framework Architecture. All participants agreed that this concept benefits interoperability, performance, safety and flexibility, thanks to the open integration of components. It also ensures return on investment, as modules can be independently exchanged for other modules / iCWP.

Frequentis Secure Audio Switch (iSAS) achieves International Common Criteria Certificate (BSI Identifier BSI-DSZ-CC-0619-2012)

Frequentis proudly announces certification achievement, at Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance at Level EAL 4+, for the conformant Secure Audio Switch – iSAS, a component used in Defence Communication Systems. This certificate was issued...

Frequentis proudly announces certification achievement, at Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance at Level EAL 4+, for the conformant Secure Audio Switch – iSAS, a component used in Defence Communication Systems. This certificate was issued by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) in July 2012 and is recognition of the latest, most advanced and smallest footprint secure audio switch available on the market!
Frequentis developed the Secure Audio Switch – iSAS, to provide RED/BLACK separation for voice and data at all RED/BLACK critical controller working positions. This vital security component enables effective operation from a single touch screen and the use of a single headset within CLASSIFIED (RED) and UNCLASSIFIED (BLACK) domains. The solution provides an essential and cost-effective capability for strategic, operational and tactical C2 networks for secure Ground-Ground and Ground-Air- Ground communications and allows accreditation up to and including a level of SECRET.
Based on experience in deploying RED/BLACK communication solutions, Frequentis developed a unique concept to fulfil specific mission critical requirements and to provide customisable layouts for the human-machine interface at RED/BLACK controller working positions without affecting the certified security module - iSAS.
iSAS is used with Frequentis‘ iSecCOM and VCS 3020X systems and has been designed completely in line with Frequentis’ IP strategy. Additionally, single-domain controller working positions can be upgraded with iSAS to RED/BLACK operation. iSAS provides the smallest foot-print of a secure audio switch currently available; this optimises deployable and mobile configurations.
The certification evaluation and conformance was performed by an approved evaluation facility using the Common Methodology for IT Security Evaluation (CEM), extended by advice of the Certification Body for components beyond EAL 5 for conformance to the Common Criteria for IT Security Evaluation (CC).
iSAS is compliant to NATO SDIP-27 Level C (NSTISSAM TEMPEST/1-92 Level III) and NATO SDIP-29 (NSTISSAM TEMPEST/2-95) standards through the installation procedures.

Vietnam Air Traffic Management (VATM) selects FREQUENTIS for implementation of smartFPLconverter

Vietnam Air Traffic Management (VATM) Southern Regional Air Traffic Services has contracted Frequentis for the supply and implementation of smartFPLconverter (FPL2012 Converter) for the Ho Chi Minh Area and Approach Control Center.
ICAO...

Vietnam Air Traffic Management (VATM) Southern Regional Air Traffic Services has contracted Frequentis for the supply and implementation of smartFPLconverter (FPL2012 Converter) for the Ho Chi Minh Area and Approach Control Center.
ICAO has introduced changes to the format for flight plan and associated ATS messages in Amendment 1 to the Procedures for Air Navigation Services - Air Traffic Management, Fifteenth Edition (PANS-ATM, Doc 4444). The changes in this amendment will be effective on November 15, 2012. To comply with Amendment 1 of ICAO 4444 and to avoid a costly upgrade of its Flight Data Processing System, VATM opened an international tender for an FPL 2012 converter.
After a thorough evaluation of all the bids, VATM awarded the contract to Frequentis based on the technical and financial merits of its smartFPLconverter solution. smartFPLconverter will be implemented as a turnkey project with a short delivery schedule of 60 days. The Factory Acceptance Tests were recently conducted in the presence of the VATM staff and successfully completed.
smartFPLconverter is built on the foundation of Frequentis’ smartMessenger, a High- Performance and High- Availability ATS Message Handling System (AMHS). smartFPLconverter is a flexible system that interconnects to Flight Data Processing and Flight Plan Handling systems available in the market using standard communication interfaces. This allows ANSPs to conform to the Amendment 1 of ICAO 4444 in a timely and cost-effective manner.
smartFPLconverter provides bi-directional conversion between the present and new FPL format and holds messages for distribution within 24 hours prior to the EOBT/DOF in the flight plan message. smarFPLconverter features a Destination Dependant Conversion (DDC) database. This allows the system to handle variations in the format of flight plans conforming to different interpretations of the 2012 format. The easily modifiable and understandable rules database allows changes to be made by local personnel as the FPL format evolves.
