Case Study: Finnish Rail Administration
Integrated Traffic Communication System
Finnish Rail Administration Ratahallintokeskus (RHK)
The Finnish Rail Administration RHK is responsible of enhancing, developing and maintaining the Finnish rail network. The paramount goal is to keep the rail network operating at peak efficiency in order to meet and excell safety standard and traffic needs. RHK maintains a rail network of about 5,794 kilometres, including 3,047 kilometres of electrified lines.
The Frequentis Solution
The new GSM-R solution in Finland will replace the existing analogue radio systems by a new single comprehensive digital infrastructure for voice and data communication. As to its core, Frequentis delivered a complete GSM-R Fixed Terminal System solution, including GSM-R dispatcher terminals, a centralized ground switching centre and remote switches with comprehensive functionality to fulfil RHK's requirements.
This comprises for instance advanced Role Management using Location Dependent Addressing (LDA) and the integration of existing analogue legacy systems as well as Public Address systems to the new RHK digital network. In total, six Train Control Centres (TCC) have been installed, commissioned and equipped in Kouvola (Main Site), Oulu, Pieksämäki, Seinäjoki, Tampere, Helsinki.
Due to its comprehensive system features, especially Role Management and in realtime updated Train Lists, the Frequentis solution makes it easy for signallers to monitor, manage and communicate with all trains within a specific environment and geographically defined areas of responsibility. In addition to the before mentioned, Voice Communication, Text Messages and Cell Broadcast Messages may be sent via the easy to use GSM-R Dicora family Graphical User Interface (GUI).
