FREQUENTIS – Country-wide Voice/Data Network for Airways New Zealand

Globally unique Air Traffic Control network operates successfully

In 2005 the Air Navigation Service Provider of New Zealand, Airways New Zealand, put Frequentis in charge of implementing a country-wide network to connect Airways’ voice and data communications between radio, radar, control towers and radar centres throughout New Zealand. The order also comprised the delivery of voice communication systems for the important ATC-centres in Auckland and Christchurch, as well as all airports. The network was successfully completed in April 2008. Airways New Zealand, stated full satisfaction during the recent project close-down meeting.

Frequentis VCX
The Frequentis VCX is a wide area networking solution designed for the most demanding safety-critical applications such as air traffic control. Frequentis provided an innovative technical solution concept - the programme for Airways New Zealand sets new global benchmarks. The Frequentis VCX integrates voice (radio, telephone) and data (radar, flight data processing) applications into a highly-available network allowing operational costs reductions at the same time. The project is now complete and Airways New Zealand is part way through the migration of all control towers and centres to Frequentis voice switches with completion expected in 2009.

The complete transition from the existing to the new voice communication systems is also handled via the Frequentis VCX-network: both systems operated in parallel until the actual switch-over. This allowed a seamless switch-over with minimised risk.
