EAD - THE EUROPEAN AIS DATABASE

The European AIS Database is the world´s largest Aeronautical Information System and represents a major step towards a single sky for Europe. The 44 ECAC states are going to use one harmonised European database.

The EAD is contracted by Eurocontrol and after four years of hard work, the Frequentis led TeamEAD has mastered the arduous challenge: All phases of the EAD project have been completed in time and in budget and according to schedule the EAD system went operational on June 6th 2003.

The EAD delivers fully validated dynamic and static aeronautical data to any subscribed user such as ATC authorities, airlines, military and commercial organisations. Due to the chosen centralised process, which also ensures a maximum of data quality, the entire way of handling and delivering this sensitive data has been changed. Data does not get duplicated any more and can easily be retrieved from a single point of access. Of course, the local AIS of the participating states are still responsible for adding, maintaining, and correcting their national data. This data has to pass, among other things, coherence tests (for quality reasons) integrated in the EAD, thus reducing workload and paper dissemination while simultaneously ensuring timely distribution. These responsible tasks are carried out by GroupEAD on behalf of Eurocontrol.
