EAD celebrates 10th anniversary

World's largest aeronautical information system is based on FREQUENTIS technology

EUROCONTROL: “At the time of its launch 10 years ago, the European Aeronautical Information Services Database (EAD) was, in its own way, revolutionary.” Today EAD is more revolutionary than ever before.
Imagine an aeronautical information management system that allows 50,000 named users to concurrently access a vast amount of data. One that covers, for example:

30,000 aerodromes/heliports

350 flight information regions (FIRs)

100,000 waypoints

7,000 non-directional beacon (NDB) navigational aids (navaids)

8,000 very high frequency (VHF) navaids

11,000 air traffic service (ATS) routes

Imagine an aeronautical information management system that has:

grown its user base by an average 32% each year since 2003increased annual license sales by an average 24% each year since 2003

been able to cope with annual growth of 45% in flight plan-related messages since 2011

Imagine an aeronautical information management system layout that:

has processed 1,600,000 flight plan-related messages since November 2012

handles almost 60,000 worldwide notices to airman (NOTAMs) each month

This is EAD, the world’s largest aeronautical information management (AIM) system: a system owned by EUROCONTROL, developed by Frequentis and jointly operated by GroupEAD Europe S.L. and Frequentis, based on strict adherence to the highest EUROCONTROL quality standards. A centralised reference database of quality-assured aeronautical information and a fully-integrated, state-of-the-art AIM solution form EAD’s strong backbone.
The EAD concept, where the location of servers and data sources is no longer important (similar to cloud computing), allows organisations to concentrate on their key competencies. The main benefits of such a distributed system are:

Lower data backup and maintenance costs

Lower data recovery costs

Cost sharing through regional approaches

More opportunity for Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) to sell services

These advantages have allowed EAD to grow beyond its original geographic context, i.e. the 46 member states of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC). Currently, eight states outside the ECAC area have decided to participate and enjoy the benefits of EAD, including Canada, New Zealand and the Philippines. Seven more - led by Kazakhstan and South Africa - are currently at various stages along the road to active participation.
How everything began
Frequentis was contracted back in 1999 to develop and supply the European AIS database. The system went into operation - on schedule - on 6 June 2003. This was a milestone in Europe’s aviation history: for the first time, the idea of "one single sky for Europe" became reality!
Frequentis has remained responsible for system development and integration for this first fully-integrated AIM system. Since its first implementation in 2003, the Frequentis AIM solution (now known as “smartAIM”) has continued to undergo further development.

FREQUENTIS Group continues its sustainable growth

Annual Report 2012

We look back at 2012 with satisfaction; it was a year that brought us certain challenges, but also numerous notable successes. This enabled us to achieve an increase in the company‘s key figures. We see that as a confirmation of our strategy of sustainable growth and international expansion of our Group.
Operating performance showed a plus of 12.2%, going from EUR 163.4 million in 2011 to EUR 183.4 million in 2012. As far as EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) was concerned, we attained an increase of 22.1%, bringing the figure to EUR 9.0 million (in 2011, EBIT was at EUR 7.3 million).
We plan to continue our course of growth and our further internationalisation in the future by bolstering existing subsidiaries and developing new local companies and shareholdings. We are very proud that we have a broad reference base, with our key accounts providing its core.
Worldwide, there are already about 22,000 working positions “made by Frequentis” in operation – used by air traffic controllers, dispatchers, operations controllers and other teams in security control centres. More than 250 customers in over 110 countries place their trust in the expertise and experience of Frequentis.

13th ICNS conference a success for FREQUENTIS

This year’s Integrated Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (ICNS) conference was held in Washington DC from April 23 - 25.

The ICNS covered long-term research and development, as well as the current implementation of integrated CNS technologies. The aim of the event was to demonstrate the significant improvements in safety and airspace efficiency envisaged by programs such as NextGen and the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) initiative. The conference once more demonstrated how global ATM services are merging within SESAR and NextGen. Frequentis attended ICNS and gave two presentations: one on the “Aerodrome Map Information Service” (April 23) and another on “Distributed Multiple Independent Layers of Security (MILS)” (April 25).
The Frequentis contribution on the Aerodrome Map Information Service was a joint venture with NORCAON/LFV, the Swedish civil aviation administration. It drew on some impressive research results from Frequentis, spreading insights across the Atlantic from SESAR to NextGen.
The service will encourage further technical developments in line with refined operational concepts. These include common situational awareness (shared by tower and ground personnel), automated taxiing network operations, and general airport layout information providing baseline data for various applications. The approach taken with the service model reuses concepts from existing standards (the ISO 19000 series) in alignment with data payload standards from RTCA DO-272C/EUROCAE ED-99C and RTCA DO-291B/EUROCAE ED-119B. This seems the best way to minimise the effort required to reach the desired level of global interoperability.
Distributed MILS introduces a concept for dependable information and communication infrastructures, as applied to ATM voice and data services. It allows selected information elements to reside in different domains, but prohibits the propagation of faults from one domain to another, thereby enabling valid business continuity design.
